Mississippi Kite Spotted!

On September 3rd, we were very lucky to see a Mississippi Kite fly over the Kiptopeke Hawkwatch platform! This species is rather uncommon in the area. It is fairly widespread in the southern United States, but has recently been expanding its range further north. It was very exciting to see, especially so early in the season.

In addition to the Mississippi Kite, we had 88 Ospreys counted yesterday! An interesting fact about Ospreys is that they will catch fish and carry them for long distances away from water sources during migration.

An honorable mention goes to the Turkey Vulture who decided to visit us at the platform for a little while. He entertained us by landing fairly gracefully on the T-pole (see gif in link here).
